Hydrogen economy in Ukraine: Roadmap

The virtual event brings together the Ukrainian authorities, business and industry stakeholders as well as international industrial associations, to discuss the strategic steps to develop hydrogen economy in Ukraine and the ways to attract foreign investment into the sector

Untapped potential

In 2020 the EU has named Ukraine among its priority partners in implementation of the European Hydrogen Strategy. The second largest in Europe and one of the largest in the world, Ukraine's gas transmission system (pipelines being over 280,000 km long) can be used for transporting the "green" hydrogen to the EU. Ukraine also possesses significant renewable energy resources (8+ GW of renewable energy capacities commissioned in 2019 only). With the assets of this kind, Ukraine has vast untapped potential in the field of hydrogen.

European Green Deal: 2030 plans

Hydrogen allows for cost-efficient transmission and storage of renewable energy and can help to decarbonise energy use in all sectors. Key condition for the European hydrogen market to function is that a 2x40 GW electrolyser market in the EU and its neighbouring countries (including Ukraine) will develop up to 2030. With a perspective to become a regional leader in the field, Ukraine has to elaborate the roadmap which would include foreign investor incentives and global best practices in hydrogen-related project implementation.
